Alviso Adobe Structural/Seismic Strengthening and Rehabilitation - Pleasanton, CA

Constructed in 1854, the Alviso Adobe is one of the few remaining examples of early California adobe architecture. Originally part of a working dairy farm, the building was in continuous use until 1969 and had undergone several additions and alterations over its long life. Today, it stands as the centerpiece of Pleasanton’s Alviso Adobe Community Park—a unique interpretive site that tells the story of California from its earliest Native American history through the Spanish Rancho era and into the 20th century, when the site became home to the state’s first certified dairy.

.

Treeline Construction was contracted by the City of Pleasanton to perform the structural and seismic strengthening and rehabilitation of the historic adobe building. The work included stabilizing the adobe walls with reinforced concrete bond beams, rebuilding and rehabilitating original adobe blocks, and fabricating replacement blocks on site using adobe material excavated directly from the property to ensure material authenticity.

Under the direction of Chris Pattillo of PGA Architects (Oakland, CA), Treeline’s preservation team also completed exterior plaster restoration with a traditional whitewash finish, rebuilding of historic doors and windows, and repair and replacement of wood flooring. Every intervention was guided by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, ensuring the building’s historic integrity was retained while enhancing its structural resilience.

The successful rehabilitation of the Alviso Adobe transformed it into a fully interpreted public museum, now operated by the City of Pleasanton. As part of the Alviso Adobe Community Park, the restored building offers visitors a rare, tangible connection to California’s layered past—preserving the craftsmanship, culture, and continuity of one of the state’s oldest surviving adobes.
